Florida, Massachusetts
The Hoosac Tunnel is a 4.75 mile long railroad tunnel located in Western Massachusetts and runs between the towns of Florida and North Adams. Work began in 1848 and was completed in 1876.
The tunnel passes through the Hoosac Range, which is an exention of Vermont's Green Mountains. During construction, 193 lives were lost earning it the nickname "The Bloody Pit". The tunnel is considered to be one of the most haunted places in Massachusetts.
Piles of rusted railroad spikes and other assorted metal line an area next to the tracks.
As you walk towards the tunnel, you experience a cool, damp breeze, odd noises from deep within the tunnel and the smell of diesel from current day locomotives. You would almost swear that a train was about to emerge from the darkness. Very creepy!

Nice - You can see a similar one from the otherside of the world here :)
Tunnels facinate me but those on railroad tracks are scary if you are on foot.
Fascinating post! The entrance to the tunnel and pile of spikes do look eerie.
It looks great from the outside but just the thought of entering makes me claustrophobic. There sure has been a lot of history pass through that tunnel. Very fascinating.
I love old railroads, and these pictures are outstanding.
The spikes remind me of when I was a boy. I used to find them by the train tracks.
These pictures are really good. The pile of spikes is interesting. I really like the history of the railroad. I also find it interesting that you can hear odd noises from the tunnel. I can definitely understand why it would be considered haunted! Great post!
I always love getting comments from you. You are so positive! And your pictures are gorgeous. You are so right. Even old railroad spikes are beautiful! if you slow down long enough to really look!
Hi Sunny, Reminds me of one of our railroad tunnels in the area where I grew up in southwest Virginia. BUT--our tunnel was much shorter... Kids would run through it --between trains, which was scary enough... I never did it (chicken!! ha ha)...
I'm sure there are many 'ghosts' in your tunnel. Wooooooo....
Hugs,
Betsy
That tunnel looks spooky from the outside! With all the deaths there were building it, I can well believe it would be haunted. Interesting post!
Nice contrasts in photo, Love the evergreens and the way they drape across the tunnel. Your evergreens leave me homesick to see the evergreens in the NW. Great history and narrative.
Your country roads post is exquisite - also makes me homesick. I was going to comment, but you already had a slew of comments and didn't need mine.
I always find railway tunnels spooky, and this is spookier than most. What a great pity about such loss of life.
Sunny...great photos and great narrative...You freaked me out...there is no way I would walk into that tunnel!

What a wonderful shot, Sunny. I guess I will have to go in search of the Florida end of it :)
that's a very long tunnel. I love the shot of the spikes. Ther's no way I would go into that tunnel, it looks very menacing.
That is one honken long tunnel. I would think that they would get smoked out when they went through with a wood burner. I remember visiting a caved in tunnel in Colorado and the walls of that cave were covered with soot. Thanks for sharing, a very interesting story. One could think that they were never going to see the light at the end of that tunnel....
Awesome pictures and awesome history!!
Thanks Sunny!!

So this is a working rail? Wonderful pictures. My husband is a railroad enthusiest. (grin) We've chased trains in the middle of the night more times than I could say...
(grin)
Great pictures and an interesting history. I believe I will just enjoy the breeze and go no further.
Caught up with your Blog entry here. Just wonder what the Tunnel is haunted with? Strange noise's? Wonder what they would be? Maybe lost Souls that were killed during the building of the Tunnel? Would like to see and experience that for myself.
Almost 30 years to be built and claiming so many lives... Yeah, very creepy!
God bless you!
