Hilltown History

Field Memorial Library
Conway, Massachusetts
When I first saw this library, located in the small farming
town of Conway, I was totally intrigued as its architecture really
stood out in the center of town. After a little research I discovered
that Marshall Field, founder of the Chicago based department store
Marshall Field and Company was born in Conway in 1834
and donated the library to the town.
Marshall Field's department stores were acquired by Macy's in 2005.
An added note of interest; due to his innovations in
customer service, Mr. Field is attributed with the quote,
"The customer is always right."

I remember Marshall Fields Stores, Sunny.. That is truly a gorgeous library. I love it when people who make it BIG in this world come back and remember their hometowns. Neat!!!!

Very unique looking building.
Ah Mr Field, what happened to your thoughts on the customer's always being right today. Sometimes seems a lost goal of the business world.

Wow! What a fortunate town to have that library. It seems that wherever I live, the libraries are always in small, unimaginative buildings. Nice picture of it, Sunny! Very interesting to know that Mr. Field is the originator of the quote about the customer always being right!

Good morning. Yes very strange looking building with that dome on top. I have learned two new things this morning. One a recipe that uses flowers and now I've learned where the quote came from.

Beautiful building... reminds me of the capitol building in Atlanta. What a lovely library to be able to visit. Here in our little town, the library is housed in an old IGA grocery. It had been remodeled, but is still a big rectangle of a building.

It's a shame so many businesses have forgotten Marshall Field's credo. That is certainly a very impressive library building.
