Security Guard

Guard Llama
Mohawk Trail, Massachusetts

With the ever present threat of Coyotes,
sheep farmers
have been using Llamas
as a nonlethal alternative
for reducing predation.

Multiple Llamas are not as effective as one Llama.
It seems if you put a couple of Llamas together,
they tend to hang out together and forget the sheep!

It only takes a few days for sheep and Llamas
to adjust to each other.

I told my hubby I had a great idea for replacing our lawnmower and fertilizer.. Sheep!
And we could use a llama as a guard dog too.
Great post and pictures, Sunny.

Those llamas, you can dress them up but you can't take them anywhere...at least not together.

I've heard that before - That llamas are great watch 'dogs'. Wonder what my neighbors would think if I got one for my backyard. They are kinda cute in an odd way.

Sunny the Llama shot made me LOL - what a great picture! I had no idea they were used as guards, that's really interesting. Once again, I am enlightened! Just another reason why I love your blog...

I didn't know llamas could guard sheep. That's wonderful and now you have another type of animal to watch and photograph!

I heard that llamas spit at you when they get mad. I have had students that use llamas while hiking as well.

I've heard they make great guards. Having had a slightly scary experience with one many years ago (ok, I was a wimp!), I wouldn't mess with one!

The first picture of the Llama. Are those teeth ? I can see why they chose it for a guard. Very intimedating looking.

I've heard of farmers in Britain using them to keep away foxes during lambing time.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your comments.
I wanted to get some better pictures so I went back today and the Llama and sheep were gone...must be at greener pastures! Then my camera started to act up...it was one of those days!

Snapper II, yes those are teeth! I think he could use a good Orthodontist, LOL!

Thanks Sunny, that's something else I've learned. Wonder if a Llama would be useful for keeping out the foxes in my garden.

It's interesting that llamas can be used to protect sheep! Thanks for the education.

I have never heard of that before, but I bet it works. A llama would think it is a part of the sheep heard, so it would protect it's fellow members. We have large packs of coyotes in the timber area around our town. Their call is so spookie. My brother fights them off in California to protect his small dog.
