Highland Cattle

Highland Cattle are an ancient Scottish breed
and are known to be very hardy.

The breed was developed from two sets of stock,
one orignally black and the other reddish.

They both graze and browse and eat plants that
many other cattle avoid.
Although groups of cattle are generally called herds,
a group of highlands is known as a fold.

Photographed in Cummington, Massachusetts.

General information taken from the Internet.

I know Highland Cattle, but hey that one has such a cute face, even the profile is good. I didn't know that about the food though.

What unique cattle! I especially like the picture of the last one eating hay. I have always enjoyed standing close to cows and horses when they eat hay, they make it sound delicious!

Very informative post and also beautiful! It reminds me my grandmother, she used to know everything about these lovely animals...of course I think in Brazil about the different weather they could not have a good adaptation.
Thanks so much for this beautiful post! I loved it! :)

I love the bangs in the face hairdo of the first photo and then I noticed a little straw in the mouth too.
The profile in the third makes a great photo, Sunny!

I don't think cute is the proper word but I think they are regardless. At least they look warm under that furry coat.

Looks like you're on the "mooove" again, Sunny. This isn't just some shaggy cow story, is it?

Hi Sunny;) I love their hairstyles and faces. (They look Scots!) are they known as Highland Cattle or do you also get a breed called Angus? (Black and Red)We have these in South Africa but they're not woolly at all. (((Hugs))) Jo

I laugh every time I see those Highland cattle, Sunny... They just make me snicker for some reason...

I do think you need to comb their hair before taking their picture next time though.. ha

Whoa, that top photo makes it look like it's a sturdy breed. Kind of cute though. Must be able to stand cold weather with all of that hair.

Two friends of mine breed Highlands, Sunny, one in Skye and the other in Hawick. Did you know that they are the oldest pedigreed cattle in the world? It is believed that they originated from the Far East and were brought to the Western Isles and Highlands by the Vikings. The black ones, or Kyloes, first appeared in Skye and the Western Isles, later moving to the West Highlands alongside their red cousins. They are hardy alright, how they can withstand the extreme Highland/Island weather amazes me, as they are always outside. I'm glad to see more crofters returning to breeding these wonderful creatures. They are far more eco-friendly than sheep. Lizzy :)

Sunny, I don't think I've ever seen any animals like these. It beats me how they stay so clean. I would think the hair would get matted.

Great looing cows. I don't think that I've seen this breed in person before. They really are photogenic.
