Out Of Business

Reflection Of A Bygone Year

Developed in 1866 and closed in 1985, this old mill specialized in glassines, which is the cellophane type of paper used in window envelopes. Close to the Vermont border, it is located on the banks the Deerfield River in the tiny town of Monroe Bridge, Massachusetts.

This picture was taken from the bridge, please click on it to enlarge.

Hi there!! I enjoy your pictures very much...I share my life between the city (Prague CZ) and the country (outside of Prague in a nature reserve), but I don't have any of the same sights you do (though I do love the sights I have, mind you!) so I especially enjoy seeing your pictures. Thank you for sharing them! I also enjoy your humor and the warmth with which you write your stories...you sound like someone that I would enjoy being neighbors with and having the chance to occasionally sit down and shoot the breeze over a cup of coffee. But, alas, since this is not the case, I will visit with you virtually on your blog.

I have a blog, too, but nothing nearly so endearing as yours...it is about doors...more precisely, doors in Prague which I have become addicted (so to speak!) to and now spend all my walks through the city looking for doors that I haven't photographed yet...please look and tell me what you think. I would enjoy that! http://thedoorhunter.blogspot.com

Have a wonderful day and weekend.

Wonderful composition, Sunny. Like an abstract painting. I love the echoes of rust and the ghostly ripple of the old mill's reflection.

Your photo looks just like the historic Peters Cartridge Company near us, Sunny. Same type building along the river with a haunting look to it.

I agree with brattcat. It is like an abstract painting. Great job. And I love old industrial stuff.

This is really good the way you got the whole building in the reflection. I love the way the picture is framed too. The story behind the building is interesting, but it's too bad that it was open all that time and then had to close.

What a beautiful reflection Sunny! You certainly have captured the mood of the place.

Sunny I think the reflection of the building adds to the photograph...it lets our imagination picture the building itself from the reflection. I also learned something today...I never really thought about the fact that glassines have to be made just like anything else!

This is very good Sunny. It's as if I'm looking back (reflecting if you will) to the bygone years. The bridge frames it very nicely.

What a wonderful reflection at the mill, Sunny. Time marches on and right by wonderful old places like this one. Monroe Bridge sounds like a delightful old town to visit.

Wow, it made it into the 80's. That's a long run. Too bad it isn't still going, I guess??

That's nice. I like the subdued colors and mirror image of that very still water. Interesting perspective too, catching just the corner of the building.

Beautiful reflection. It brings a mood of solemness. Perhaps because the building is empty, the business closed. A casualty of modern technology?

Dear Sunny, fabulous work with your camera, this reflection shot is amazing, beautiful nuances and light!
I didn't know this kind of company and what could be the work, I mean about "glassines",it's really new for me.Thanks for teaching me okay!

I like the dreamlike look of the reflection and the mood of the music playing to accompany it is awesome!
I know some people don't like music playing but I do it too - yours is beautiful. Thank you. :)

Love this reflection of the old mill.

My husband and I have begun searching for old mills across Ontario. We have found a few so far, not many of which are in good condition. I think that's sad!

Good capture.

Hi Sunny, It's sad to see old businesses close. There are so many around here ---and the buildings just remain in disrepair. When I see buildings like that, I just stand there and think about all of the people who used to work there... Life changes daily--doesn't it????
Hugs,
Betsy

Not only am I graced with a great picture, where I can even see the windows of the building, but I also learned something new as well.

Beautiful reflection shot, Sunny!

I like the way your story is told through the reflection. The old mill is just a reflection of what it used to be and so viewing it from this perspective is very fitting.
