The weathering of the 'crown' to me is far more appealing than something brand spankin' new. Or do they put cupolas on new barns nowadays? Um, do they even BUILD wooden barns anymore??? Not around here that I've noticed. Everything is prefab metal!
There is always something about cupolas that attract us, isn't there???? My eyes always go to the top... What a neat picture, Sunny. Thanks!!! Hugs, Betsy
Well- I don't know WHAT it's used for - I just like it's character! And the weather vane on top is the finishing touch, like a cherry on top of a sundae!
I have always been fascinated with the top notches on farm buildings. I put on on my tiny garden shed just because I could. That one is such a fine looking guy.
From the shores of New England to the Oregon coast, I would like to share some of the places that I've been and things that I've seen.
As we travel you may notice; there is an emphasis on Massachusetts...my home state, you will see a lot of barns...that I love, whether old, new or dilapidated, we are not traveling in any particular direction, and we may visit some places more than once.
Please enjoy my American Photo Journey and your comments are welcomed!

The photo in the title...
features the Far Away Farm in Ashfield, Massachusetts.
I was born in my grandmother's old mill house in Cornwall, England and came to the USA with my parents in 1958. My Dad was in the RAF and as a child I lived in many different locations in England and even the Rock of Gibraltar.
Massachusetts has always been home in the US except for a brief period when I resided in Idaho, giving me a chance to explore the Great American West. For nearly 30 years I lived on Cape Cod before my husband and I moved back to the mountains* of Massachusetts with our Goldendoodle Lucy, and our cats, Lilly and Molly. I am also the mother of a grown son.
*Some of you would call them hills but they're mountains to me!

You're right, I didn't even notice the delapidation at first sight.
I wish our old barn had a 'crown'!
This one has seen a lot of weather in its day.
Excuse my ignorance but what are they used for?
I may be wrong, diane, but I think it may be for venting while the hay continues to dry and to let the gases escape. That is just a guess.
Sunny, wonderful.
Yes, yes, quite nice!
Thanks Gail, you are correct - cupolas are used for venting and most are topped with a weathervane.

Cupolas are as beautiful as it is useful. It maybe a bit tatter but it is till heavenly to to look at, Sunny.
You cool picture, again!
it's a wonderful crown for the old barn. it appears to me it might be easily blown off with a stiff wind, but it might just stand there forever
Perfect description Sunny!

Yes, the barn's crowing glory. Perfect way to describe it as it regally sits atop its barn.
I can only hope that this barn continues to wear its cupola. It could use some TLC.
I always like cupolas and weathervanes. This one is beautiful!
I love seeing old barns. This is certainly an interesting one and has a touch of red.
It sure is like a crown. I like a little wear and age it just adds to the beauty.
